A new name has entered the citizenship by investment conversation in 2026: Botswana. The country’s proposed Impact Investment Programme has generated significant early interest, with a proposed minimum investment of just $75,000 — a figure that, if finalized, would make it one of the most affordable citizenship by investment programs in the world.

If launched, Botswana would also become the first CBI program offered by a stable African nation with a strong rule-of-law reputation, a distinction that has clearly captured attention: the proposal received 464 pre-registrations from applicants across 77 countries within its first week alone. Proposed investment areas reportedly include housing, renewable energy, tourism, and mining diversification, reflecting the government’s broader economic development goals. A related Citizenship Amendment Bill has already moved through the legislative process, with further dual citizenship amendments targeted for later in 2026.
It’s important to be clear-eyed here: Botswana has not yet formally launched its CBI program, and key details — including final investment thresholds, due diligence standards, and family inclusion rules — remain unconfirmed. Early enthusiasm doesn’t guarantee smooth execution, and history shows that brand-new programs often face delays and revisions before becoming fully operational.
That said, the level of pre-registration interest suggests this program could become highly sought after — and potentially oversubscribed — soon after launch. For investors who want to be positioned early, staying informed now is far better than trying to catch up later.
